Goalkeeper

The shortlist is short: Peter Schmeichel, whose presence underpinned Manchester United's dominance, and Petr Čech, a model of consistency through Chelsea's title years. We'll take Schmeichel for the sheer aura and the saves that won points on their own.

Defence

At right-back, the attacking threat of a prime full-back is hard to ignore. In the centre, you want a leader and a reader of the game — the kind of partnership that defends the box and starts attacks. On the left, an overlapping full-back who could cross and tackle in equal measure. The brief for this back four is simple: no passengers, two genuine organisers in the middle, and full-backs who contribute at both ends.

Midfield

This is where titles are decided. A holding midfielder to break up play and keep the shape; a box-to-box engine who scores and tackles; and a creator who sets the tempo. The Premier League has produced all three archetypes in abundance — the trick is balance, so you don't end up with three players who all want the same job.

Attack

Up top, a centre-forward who guarantees goals across a decade, flanked by a pacey wide threat and a creative wide forward who drifts inside. The front three should stretch defences horizontally and offer a reliable finisher through the middle — pace, width and a guaranteed 20-goal season.

How to build it

Notice the shape of the argument: every line has a clear job, and the team is balanced rather than stacked with similar players. That's exactly how you should think when you draft. If you load up on three flair forwards and ignore the holding midfielder, the XI looks great and plays badly.
