Chemistry explained
Chemistry is the idea at the heart of Gaffer XI's roguelike Climb mode — and the thing that makes it a football game, not a generic number-cruncher. Players who belong together play better together. Here's how it works and how to build around it.
The three bonds
Chemistry comes from three kinds of shared history between players in your XI:
- Same club — players from the same club understand each other. Two gives a small lift; three, four or five stack into a bigger one.
- Same era — players from the same decade share a footballing world; a cluster of them earns a team-wide nudge.
- Same exact squad — the strongest bond of all. Two or more players from the same historic team (say, a specific Ajax or Milan vintage) understand each other instinctively, and the bonus grows fast as you add more.
Each bond raises the effective rating of the players involved, shown as a green +X on their card. A modest XI with strong bonds can outperform a higher-rated but disconnected one.
Why it rewards real football knowledge
Chemistry turns your knowledge of football history into an edge. Recognise that a handful of names came from the same great side, and you can assemble a true "core" — the spine of a famous team — and reap a stacking bonus the casual drafter misses. It's the difference between eleven good players and a team.
How to build around a core
- Anchor on one club or era. When the draft offers you a player from a club you already have, that bond is often worth more than a slightly higher-rated outsider.
- Watch the reward offers. In the Climb, reinforcement offers are biased toward your most common club and era — lean into the core the game is helping you build.
- Don't break a bond for a small upgrade. Swapping a same-club player for a marginally better outsider can cost you more chemistry than the rating gains.
- Combine with relics. A relic like Club Legend (which boosts your biggest club block) multiplies the value of a strong core.
Chemistry vs. raw rating
It's a genuine trade-off, and that's what makes drafting interesting. A scattered XI of higher-rated names can be beaten by a tightly-bonded core of slightly weaker players.
