The greatest club teams of all time

Every era throws up a side that feels untouchable — a team whose style and dominance still shape how the game is played. These are the club teams most often named in that conversation, and what made each of them special. They're also a great place to start when you're drafting a side in Gaffer XI.

Real Madrid (1955–1960)

The original superpower. Real Madrid won the first five European Cups in a row, built around Alfredo Di Stéfano — a complete forward who dropped deep, created and finished — alongside Ferenc Puskás and Francisco Gento. No side has matched that run of continental dominance, and it set the template for what a "galáctico" team could be.

Ajax and the Netherlands' Total Football (early 1970s)

Under Rinus Michels and inspired by Johan Cruyff, Ajax won three consecutive European Cups (1971–73) playing Total Football — a fluid system where any outfield player could take over any role. It was as much an idea as a team, and its DNA runs through Barcelona and the modern possession game. Cruyff later carried those principles into management and changed football twice.

AC Milan (late 1980s–early 1990s)

Arrigo Sacchi's Milan tore up the Italian obsession with man-marking and built a high-pressing, zonal side that pushed the defensive line up the pitch. With the Dutch trio of Gullit, Van Basten and Rijkaard in front of the legendary back line of Baresi and Maldini, Milan won back-to-back European Cups and later, under Capello, went unbeaten over a full Serie A season.

Manchester United (1998–99)

Sir Alex Ferguson's treble winners are remembered as much for their character as their quality — never more so than the stoppage-time turnaround in the Champions League final. A homegrown core (the "Class of '92") mixed with signings gave United a relentless, comeback-proof identity.

Barcelona (2008–2012)

Pep Guardiola's Barcelona is, for many, the peak of the possession era: tiki-taka, a false nine in Lionel Messi, and a midfield of Xavi and Iniesta that could keep the ball almost at will. They won two Champions Leagues in three years and produced performances — like the 2011 final against United — that opponents simply could not live with.
