The anatomy of a great team
A team is more than eleven good players — it's the right player doing the right job in every part of the pitch. Here's what each line actually contributes to winning, and how to weigh them when you build a side.
Goalkeeper: the foundation
A great goalkeeper turns likely goals into saves and steadies everyone in front of them. The position is low-glamour but high-leverage: one world-class keeper can be worth several points over a season. When you build a team, never treat the keeper as the slot you "fill last" — a weak one is the easiest way to lose tight games.
Defence: organisation over heroics
The best defences aren't just made of great tacklers; they're organised. Centre-backs who read danger early, communicate and hold a line prevent more goals than last-ditch challenges do. Full-backs add a second job — defend their flank and support the attack — so quality there quietly lifts the whole side. A back line with no weak link is the platform everything else is built on.
Midfield: where games are won
Midfield is the engine room and usually the difference between good and great teams. It splits into three broad jobs:
- The anchor — shields the defence, wins the ball, keeps the shape.
- The engine — box-to-box energy, links defence and attack, chips in with goals.
- The creator — sets tempo, unlocks defences with the final pass.
Get the blend wrong — three creators and no anchor, say — and you'll dominate the ball and still lose, because nobody protects the back four.
Attack: decisive moments
Forwards are judged on the rarest, most valuable action in football: putting the ball in the net. A reliable centre-forward who scores across a whole season is worth more than a spectacular one who disappears in big games. Width and pace stretch defences and create the space the finisher needs. But even here, balance matters: a front three that doesn't track back leaves the rest of the team exposed.
Weighing it all up when you draft
The takeaway for building a team — in real life or in a draft game — is to think in jobs, not names:
- Secure the spine first: keeper, centre-backs, a controlling midfielder, a striker.
- Eliminate weak links before adding another star — opponents punish your worst player.
- Value defence as highly as attack; clean sheets win as many games as goals.
That's exactly the method we lay out in the balanced XI guide, and it's why a well-rounded side beats a top-heavy one in Gaffer XI's match engine.
