The Hall of Fame is not just a ranking of the strongest squads. Alongside the main boards, Gaffer XI runs underdog leaderboards that reward winning with the lowest-rated or cheapest team — and they are often the easiest place to claim a number one.
Why the underdog boards exist
If the only thing that mattered was raw rating, the leaderboard would just reward whoever drafted the most stars. The underdog boards flip that: they celebrate efficiency. Winning the league with a squad rated in the low seventies, or lifting a Money Mode title for a fraction of the budget, is a far greater feat than steamrolling the competition with legends. The boards exist to make that skill visible.
How they are scored
Underdog boards only count champions — you have to actually win the competition to qualify. Among champions, they rank by how much of an underdog you were: the lower your team's overall rating (or, in Money Mode, the lower your total spend), the higher you place. So your goal is a paradox: win the title while being as weak, on paper, as possible.
Strategy: win with the smallest possible XI
To climb an underdog board you want the lowest team rating that can still go all the way. That means deliberately leaving rating on the table without leaving holes. A few principles:
- Stay balanced. A low-rated but even team is still hard to beat. A low-rated team with one glaring weak link will simply lose. Balance matters even more here — see our balanced XI guide.
- Defend first. Modest sides win titles by being hard to beat, not by outscoring everyone. Prioritise a sound defence and grind out narrow wins.
- Pick a forgiving competition. A shorter knockout can be easier to win with a weak side than a long league, because a couple of good results — or one lucky run — can carry you. But a league lets a balanced underdog grind points steadily. Try both and see what suits your style.
Money Mode: the cheapest-title board
In Money Mode the underdog axis is spend, not rating. The target is to win while leaving as much budget unspent — or rather, while assembling the cheapest possible title-winning team. The approach mirrors our Money Mode guide: buy a couple of efficient, high-value players for the spine and fill the rest with the cheapest reliable options you can find. A bargain title beats an expensive one here every time.
Make your run count
When you finish a qualifying run, submit it to the Hall of Fame to lock in your place. Remember your team name is shown publicly next to the entry, so pick something you would be proud to see near the top. And because the boards are live, a great underdog run can sit at number one until someone manages to win with an even weaker team — which, by design, is very hard to do.
